Syrup Presentation

Each liquid contains:
Sucralflate 1000 mg
Oxethazaine 20 mg

The combination contains two medications; Sucralfate and Oxetacaine which helps in treating and relieving the pain of gastric ulcers. Sucralfate is a medication that is widely used to prevent and treat a number of diseases in the gastrointestinal tract such as duodenal ulcers, gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD), gastritis, peptic ulcer disease, stress ulcer, in addition to dyspepsia. It is considered a cytoprotective agent, protecting cells in the gastrointestinal tract from damage caused by agents such as gastric acid, bile salts, alcohol, and acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin), among other substances. Oxetacaine, also called oxethazaince, is a potent surface analgesic. Its actions have shown to relieve dysphagia, relieve pain due to reflux, chronic gastritis, and duodenal ulcer.

Mechanism of action

Sucralfate:

This drug aids in the healing of duodenal ulcers, relieving painful inflammation by creating a protective mechanical barrier between the lining or skin of the gastrointestinal tract and damaging substances. Sucralfate forms a complex that binds to protein-rich exudate found on the surface of ulcers. It binds to albumin and fibrinogen, preventing blood clot lysis by stomach acid (hydrochloric acid). Sucralfate increases the tissue levels of fibroblast growth factors and epidermal growth factors, leading to an increase in prostaglandins at the gastrointestinal tract lining, which promote the healing of gastrointestinal ulcers. In addition, sucralfate acts to increase levels of growth factors locally, and also causes an increase in prostaglandins which are important in the healing of the mucosa (lining) of the gastrointestinal tract.

Oxetacaine:

Oxetacaine improves common gastrointestinal symptoms. Oxetacaine is part of the anesthetic antacids which increase the gastric pH while providing relief from pain for a longer period of duration at a lower dosage. This property has been reported to relieve the symptoms of hyperacidity. Oxetacaine is reported to produce a reversible loss of sensation and to provide a prompt and prolonged relief of pain. Oxetacaine diminishes the conduction of sensory nerve impulses near the application site which in order reduces the permeability of the cell membrane to sodium ions. This activity is performed by the incorporation of the unionized form into the cell membrane and exerts a local anesthetic effect on the gastric mucosa.

Side Effects

The product is possible safe for most adults. There is no disadvantage associated with the product if taken under the recommended usage however dry mouth, feeling of fullness, loss of appetite and nausea can occur in some patients.

  • Aceclofenac may decrease the excretion rate of Sucralfate which could result in a higher serum level.
  • The metabolism of Albendazole, Alfentanil, Alfuzosin can be decreased when combined with Oxetacaine.

Precautions

  • Not to be used in pregnancy and breast feeding until prescribed by your physician
